My wife, Connie, has a blog that she runs so that our family and friends from all over the country can see how our two children are growing and changing. She does an amazing job with it and our family loves when she posts. Those types of blogs make sense to me. It allows our family a chance to see my son and daughter as they learn new things or experience new adventures. However, I find myself more hesitant to join in on the blogging world that is simply the expressed opinions of one person or another. Not that some people don't have good things to say, but more so because I feel narcissistic in putting something on the internet assuming that the multitudes will log on to see what I have to say on things. So as you read this, know that I don't have all the answers, and I don't assume to be an authority on everything.
So why have a blog? Though I don't have all the answers, and I am not a leading authority on most topics, God has placed on my heart a desire to equip students to carry out the Great Commission. I believe that God has called me to train students to live lives that change the world for the kingdom of God. I believe that there is a war going on, and our students have not been trained for battle. So, I have buckled and given in on the blogger world in hopes that this might be one more tool for me to equip a student uprising that is willing and able to do battle against mindsets, world views, false doctrine, and invisible kingdoms that are destroying lives and snatching souls. I don't mean to sound over-dramatic, but there is a war being waged and we must be prepared for it.
John Piper made the following statement about a lack of urgency to do battle in the American church, in his book When I Don't Desire God, "Worship services, Bible studies, prayer meetings, and fellowship gatherings in many churches do not have a spirit of earnestness and intensity and fervor and depth because people do not really believe that anything significant is at stake in the fight for joy - least of all their eternal life. The all-important priority seems to be cheerfulness, even jollity."
So... my hope for this blog is that it would be a call for students to do battle, and a means to equip them for their fight. God is placing in my heart a sense of urgency to wage a good fight. This urgency has caused me to take up the discipline of blogging, so enjoy and I hope it is helpful.
